At Droitwich Spa Dental Aesthetics & Implant Centre, we understand that the idea of a tooth extraction can be dismaying and daunting for a patient. We’ll always do everything we can to save a tooth, but in some cases, tooth extraction is the only correct course of action and the only way to ensure the long-term health of the surrounding teeth and the overall well-being of the mouth.
There are two types of extraction available – ‘simple’ and ‘surgical’. Simple extractions can be performed when the tooth being removed is visible above the gum line and is not broken. Performed under local anaesthetic, simple extractions involve gently removing the tooth from the socket with a pair of forceps.
Surgical extractions are used in more complex situations, such as when the tooth is buried beneath the gum line, as with an impacted wisdom tooth, or if the tooth is broken. Surgical extractions are often performed in hospitals under general anaesthetic.
All tooth extractions are performed under anaesthetic, so you won’t be able to feel a thing in the area being treated. Once the anaesthetic has started to wear off, you may become aware of some pain in the area, but this can normally be alleviated by taking over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
