Root Canal Treatment

Our Principal Dentist, Dr Vivek Chadha, has a specialist interest in this field, including Post Graduate training from the prestigious King’s College London. Dr Chadha is able to perform a wide range of Endodontic treatments, including the most common – and probably the most well-known – root canal treatment. He’s also able to perform surgical micro-endodontics and retreatment cases.

Why do I need a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatments become necessary when the dental pulp and root of the tooth have become infected and/or inflamed. If left untreated, this can lead to severe pain in the patient, an abscess, a loose tooth, and ultimately the loss or extraction of the tooth.

How will I know if I need a root canal treatment?

With regular check-ups, our team may diagnose the need for a root canal treatment before you even experience any of the related symptoms. If not, you may experience:

• Increased sensitivity
• Pain when chewing or biting down
• An abscess (advanced cases)
• A loose tooth (advanced cases)

What is the process of receiving a root canal treatment like?

1. Local anaesthetic is applied so you are pain-free throughout
2. The tooth is irrigated, disinfected, and the infection is removed
3. The tooth is filled in with a rubber-type material to prevent re-infection

Will it be painful?

We will always aim to make this treatment as pain-free as possible, although in cases of abscess, it may be slightly uncomfortable. We’ll apply a local anaesthetic before carrying out the treatment and can recommend over-the-counter medications to take at home once the anaesthetic has worn off.

Will I need a crown?

Some patients may also have to have a crown fitted in order to fully restore the tooth. This depends on the extent of the damage done to the tooth and is decided on an individual basis.
