Oral health is intrinsically linked with our overall general health, with poor oral health and hygiene related to instances of diabetes and heart disease. A proper oral hygiene routine is based on good at-home care, regular visits to the dentist, and frequent dental hygiene appointments. When all three of these are in alignment and working together, the result is a super healthy mouth, a super healthy patient, and a very happy smile.
Dental hygiene is the cornerstone of good oral health. A proper home care routine will be complemented and supplemented by regular dental hygiene appointments, which, when working together, can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease from occurring, which in turn can help prevent further interventionist treatments from being necessary.
Gum disease is one of the most common diseases in Europe. It is highly preventable and treatable, but when left untreated it can lead to recession of the gums, bleeding gums, and even tooth loss. It has also been linked with an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease.
A proper at-home oral care routine of brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing and/or interdental brushes can help prevent gum disease from ever occurring. On top of this, regular dental hygiene appointments are paramount. We recommend twice annual visits to all our patients, to help keep their teeth and gums in tip-top condition.
Your dental hygienist will carefully and gently check the mouth for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease before carrying out a professional cleaning. This professional treatment can provide a level of cleaning that simply can’t be attained at home, and will leave the teeth looking and feeling great. Your hygienist will also be able to recommend specific at-home treatments or routines to help address any issues they may have found.
